City of Newcastle Classical Ballet Eisteddfod
As most people are aware, the eisteddfod was cancelled this year. This occurred as we were given new information from the university very late, just under four weeks out from the event, about the availability and safety of the theatre. We made what we felt was a responsible decision and cancelled the event.
We refunded all entry fees and with the refund cheque we sent a letter inviting all entrants to a public meeting regarding the future of the eisteddfod. Considering the planned refurbishment of the Griffith Duncan Theatre at the university, we felt plannin
g for 2010 was going to be difficult, as the planned completion time is March 2010 and completion times are notoriously unreliable. There were 5 committee members at that meeting and 5 members of the public. A lively discussion ensued, but it was obvious that there was not a ground swell of support for the continuation of the eisteddfod due to the small number of people attending.
The following decisions were subsequently made by the committee at the following meeting:
- The committee is to remain in recession.
- All monies are to be held for a period of 2 years. If no group comes forward to run the eisteddfod in that time, the money will probably be donated to the John Hunter Kids Club, depending on the decision of the Lions Club at the time.
- The floor and the number board are to be stored and after a period of 2 years, sold.
- All perpetual trophies are to be collected and stored and after 2 years a permanent place be sought for them to be displayed.
If there is a group that would like to take over the organisation of this eisteddfod, please contact:

The committee is very sorry that we have had to end this way, but we also recognise that sometimes events run their course, and in this case it seems as if this event has done so.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Lewis |
